In recent years, apps such as Xiaohongshu have been widely downloaded and used locally, raising concerns over information security, fraud and other campus safety issues. In response, the Ministry of Education has established the “Don’t Get Lost in Xiaohongshu, Stay Smart in Youth” portal. A link to this portal has been placed in the “Awareness Campaign” section under the “Quick Links” page on our university’s homepage for teachers and students to access and use as a reference.

At the same time, the National Security Bureau issued a warning, noting that inspections by the Investigation Bureau and Criminal Investigation Bureau of several China-produced apps—including Xiaohongshu, Weibo, TikTok (Douyin), WeChat, and Baidu Cloud—revealed issues such as excessive personal data collection and permission abuse. Data packets from these apps may be transmitted to servers in mainland China, potentially leading to misuse of users’ personal information by third parties. All faculty, staff and students are advised to remain vigilant and exercise caution when using these applications.
